Procedure for Assisting Northfields Pupils with Changing for Swimming
  1. Preparation:
    • Northfields pupils will travel to and from St Chris’ School, Letchworth, via minibus for their swimming sessions.
    • At St Chris’ School, there are separate cubicles available, eliminating the need for designated male and female changing spaces.
    • Staff should ensure the changing environment is monitored appropriately while respecting pupils’ privacy.
  2. Supervision:
    • Staff should position themselves to supervise the changing area while ensuring they do not intrude on pupils’ privacy.
    • Pupils should be reminded of the code of conduct to maintain a safe and respectful environment in the changing area.
  3. Assisting Pupils:
    • Seeking Permission:
      • If a pupil requires help with changing, staff must first ask the pupil for permission to assist.
      • Ask the pupil which member of staff they feel comfortable with providing the assistance.
    • Informing Colleagues:
      • The selected staff member must inform a colleague of their intention to assist the pupil.
      • This colleague will oversee the interaction to ensure safeguarding for both the pupil and the adult.
    • Providing Assistance:
      • Encourage the pupil to be as independent as possible, offering verbal guidance before physical help.
      • Any physical assistance must be conducted openly and within sight of others, without compromising the pupil’s privacy.
  4. Special Considerations:
    • For pupils with additional needs, refer to the school’s Intimate Care Policy to ensure support is provided in line with agreed plans.
    • Involve parents and the pupil in decisions about intimate care arrangements, documenting these and reviewing them regularly.
  5. Parental Communication:
    • Parents should be informed about the procedures for assisting pupils with changing, ensuring they understand the steps taken to safeguard their children.
