Our Story
Northfields Infants and Nursery School is a place where pupils are known well, taught precisely and expected to succeed. We combine warmth with structure, ambition with care, and strong relationships with clear boundaries. Children learn best when they feel safe — and they thrive when adults are consistent.
Our classes are named after constellations – groups of stars. Each pupil is unique, but part of something bigger. Guided by our REACH values – Respect, Expression, Achievement, Creativity and Hearts Full of Fun – we nurture and inspire learners to reach for the stars. REACH is not a slogan here. It shapes how we speak, teach and lead.
Many pupils join us with emerging language, communication or developmental needs. We treat this as a starting point, not a ceiling. We do not lower expectations; we build pupils up to meet them.
A Curriculum with Purpose
Our curriculum is deliberately sequenced to secure the foundations that matter most in an infant and nursery school: language development, phonics, early writing, number fluency, emotional regulation and fine motor control. We prioritise what will make the greatest long-term difference.
Independence is taught, modelled and expected. Pupils learn to organise resources, use equipment responsibly, listen attentively, complete tasks with care and reflect on their learning. From pencil grip to sentence construction, from using cutlery to tidying shared spaces, these routines build resilience and self-belief. Adults step in at the right moment, not the first moment, so that pupils learn to think and act for themselves.
Writing is a clear priority. Through focused professional development and collaboration with local schools, we are sharpening the precision of our writing instruction, including transcription, sentence construction and purposeful composition. We expect pupils to write with fluency, accuracy and pride.
Learning extends beyond the classroom through Forest School, Gardening Club (holder of the Green Flag Eco Award) and Multi-Sports provision. These experiences strengthen confidence, physical development and curiosity. Our parent association, NIPA, plays an active role in creating inclusive events that combine enjoyment with purpose.
Subject leaders strengthen consistency across classes so that pupils experience the same high expectations, clear routines and ambitious curriculum wherever they are in the school.
Inclusive, Relational and Clear
Inclusion is embedded in daily practice. Pupils learn best when they feel safe, understood and appropriately challenged. Emotional regulation, communication and behaviour are taught explicitly, not assumed.
Pupils with SEND are supported through careful assessment and a clear graduated approach. Adaptations may include sensory adjustments, structured workstations, personalised resources using Widgit symbols, visual timetables and scaffolded learning. Staff focus on knowing when to step in and when to step back, promoting independence rather than dependency.
For pupils with more complex needs, Lynx Class provides a well-resourced base for regulation and engagement, alongside planned access to mainstream learning where appropriate. Lynx is part of the school, not apart from it. Inclusion is not separate from our curriculum; it is woven through it.
Every child deserves to feel capable. We plan accordingly.
High Expectations with Care
We maintain high expectations for learning, behaviour and attendance. Expectations are clear. Support is proactive. Compassion and consistency sit side by side.
Attendance is monitored daily through Arbor. We act early, because small patterns can become significant barriers. Families are contacted promptly where concerns arise, with welfare checks and practical support offered when needed. Breakfast Club supports punctuality and readiness to learn.
Safeguarding is fundamental to our work. As an infant school serving families in Letchworth and the surrounding area, we understand that some pupils face complex challenges beyond the classroom. We respond with calm professionalism, persistent engagement with external agencies when required, and strong partnership with families. Every decision is driven by what will genuinely improve a child’s safety and life chances.
Pupil voice is meaningful. Children are encouraged to reflect on their learning and experiences, helping to shape improvements and strengthening their sense of agency.
Looking Ahead with Clarity
Our story is one of clarity, reflection and continual improvement. We celebrate what works and address what needs strengthening, particularly in securing consistently strong writing outcomes and deepening inclusive practice.
Through to 2029, we are committed to strengthening our research-informed inclusive approach and sharing what works with others. Our focus remains steady: pupils who feel safe, aim high and learn well.
At Northfields, success is not left to chance. It is built, every day, by design.
