Impact statement

At Northfields Infants & Nursery School, the impact of our curriculum is evident in what pupils know, remember and can do, and in the confidence and independence they develop as learners.

Many children enter school with lower starting points in communication, language and aspects of personal development. Our curriculum deliberately prioritises these foundations. As pupils move through Nursery and Key Stage 1, they develop fluency in reading, increasing control and stamina in writing, and secure understanding of number and calculation. They explain their thinking clearly, apply knowledge across subjects and demonstrate that learning is retained over time.

A strong emphasis on speech, language and communication enables pupils to articulate ideas, listen attentively and participate fully in lessons. Structured phonics teaching secures accurate decoding and supports developing comprehension. In mathematics, pupils demonstrate fluency and use reasoning to solve problems with increasing independence and precision.

Inclusion is integral to our curriculum design. Through a graduated approach, pupils with SEND and those facing barriers to learning access the same ambitious curriculum as their peers. Adaptations are carefully planned within classroom teaching so that support builds competence rather than dependency. Over time, pupils develop improved self-regulation, greater engagement and increasing independence in managing their learning.

The impact of our personal development provision is visible in the calm, purposeful climate of the school. Pupils understand routines, respond positively to consistent expectations and show respect for one another. They learn how to resolve disagreements, reflect on their behaviour and persevere when learning is challenging. Our REACH values — Respect, Expression, Achievement, Creative and Hearts full of fun — are reflected consistently in daily interactions and in the pride pupils take in belonging to the school community.

Safeguarding is embedded in the culture of the school. Pupils are known well by staff and relationships are strong. Children understand that adults will listen and act when they have a concern. This secure environment supports emotional wellbeing and readiness to learn.

By the time pupils leave Northfields, they are confident readers, developing writers and secure mathematicians. They approach new challenges with resilience, curiosity and a growing sense of responsibility. They are well prepared academically, socially and emotionally for the next stage of their education.
