Equality Duty Statement
Northfields Infants and Nursery School is committed to ensuring that every pupil and member of staff is treated fairly, with dignity and respect. As a maintained school, we meet the requirements of the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty. Our approach is rooted in the belief that equality is not only a legal responsibility but an essential foundation for a safe, nurturing and inclusive school.
Our Legal Duties
Under the Equality Act 2010, we have due regard to the need to:
- Eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation.
- Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
- Foster positive relations across all protected characteristics.
The protected characteristics are: age (staff only), disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership (staff only), pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.
How We Meet the Duty
We demonstrate compliance with the Public Sector Equality Duty through the following ongoing practice:
- Policy and decision-making: Equality considerations are built into our policies, reviews and day-to-day decision-making across the school.
- Curriculum and teaching: All pupils have full access to the curriculum. Adaptations are made where needed to remove barriers, promote participation and support individual needs.
- Data monitoring: We track the progress, attainment and wellbeing of all pupils, including identifiable groups such as pupils with SEND, disadvantaged pupils and those with protected characteristics. Where patterns appear, we investigate the cause and act to ensure equity.
- Culture and behaviour: We expect respectful language and conduct from all members of our community. When pupils struggle with this, we educate, support and guide them to develop understanding and empathy.
- Pupil voice and relationships: Strong, trusting relationships help pupils share concerns. Staff support pupils to recognise and express emotions confidently, including those who may face additional barriers.
- Staff support: We consider staff needs sensitively, including adjustments linked to protected characteristics, wellbeing and family commitments.
- Parental engagement: Parents and carers are welcomed, listened to and supported. Strong relationships help us understand and respond to the needs of families across our community.
- Representation and awareness: We recognise and celebrate events, stories and contributions from across a wide range of cultures, identities and backgrounds.
Equality Objectives
Our equality objectives are reviewed at least every four years and monitored annually. They focus on:
- Ensuring our school community reflects and values its diversity in a positive and inclusive way.
- Advancing equality through our policies, practice and curriculum.
- Strengthening pupils’ understanding of equality, respect and inclusion.
- Improving staff knowledge of the strengths and needs of pupils from all protected characteristic groups.
- Continuously evaluating and adapting our provision to remove barriers and promote fairness.
