Early Years Foundation Stage – Statement of Intent

At Northfields Infants & Nursery School, our Early Years curriculum establishes the foundations for future academic success and personal development.

Many children enter Nursery and Reception with starting points below age-related expectations, particularly in communication, language and aspects of self-regulation. Our curriculum is designed deliberately to address these gaps early, ensuring children develop the knowledge, vocabulary and confidence required to access the full curriculum.

Communication and Language

Communication underpins all learning. Adults model precise vocabulary, extend children’s thinking through skilled questioning and create regular opportunities for structured talk. Children develop the ability to listen attentively, articulate ideas clearly and participate confidently in discussion.

Early Reading and Phonic

Phonics is taught systematically and consistently. Children develop secure decoding skills and begin to read with accuracy and growing fluency. High-quality texts and daily story time build vocabulary, comprehension and a love of reading.

Mathematics

Children develop secure number sense through practical exploration, talk and carefully sequenced teaching. They learn to count accurately, recognise number relationships and begin to apply mathematical thinking in meaningful contexts.

Play and Independent Learning

Play is central to learning in the Early Years. Through a balance of purposeful adult-led teaching and well-planned child-initiated provision, children rehearse new knowledge, solve problems and develop independence. Learning environments are designed to promote curiosity, concentration and perseverance.

Inclusion

Inclusion is embedded from the start. Children’s needs are identified early through observation and assessment. Adaptations are integrated within daily practice so that all children access an ambitious curriculum. Support builds competence and independence over time.

Personal Development

Children learn routines, develop positive relationships and begin to regulate their emotions. Our REACH values — Respect, Expression, Achievement, Creative and Hearts full of fun — are modelled consistently, forming the basis of our school culture.

Strong partnerships with parents and carers ensure children feel secure and supported. By the end of Reception, children demonstrate increasing independence, confidence in communication, early fluency in reading, secure foundations in number and readiness for the expectations of Key Stage 1.
